Repairing a tooth is different from replacing it

Restorative dentistry includes several treatments with different jobs. A filling repairs a limited area of damage. A crown covers a tooth that needs more support. Bridges and dentures replace missing teeth; implants support replacement teeth. Choosing a treatment starts with the condition of the tooth and its supporting tissues, rather than the appearance of a restoration alone.

Compare the main restorative options

Tooth-colored fillings: repair a smaller defect

A filling replaces tooth structure lost to a cavity or selected damage. The dentist removes the decayed tissue and places a restorative material in the prepared area. A filling needs sufficient remaining tooth structure to support it; it is not the answer to every large break. Read about tooth-colored fillings.

Crowns: cover and support a weakened tooth

A crown surrounds the visible portion of a tooth. It may be considered when a tooth is broken, weakened or has a large existing filling with too little sound tooth remaining. The tooth still needs healthy support and ongoing care. A crown does not make it immune to decay or gum disease. Explore crowns and bridges.

Bridges: fill a gap with a fixed restoration

A conventional bridge replaces one or more missing teeth using neighboring teeth for support. Those supporting teeth become part of the treatment plan. A fixed bridge stays in place and requires cleaning around its supports and beneath the replacement tooth. Its suitability depends on the location of the gap and the condition of the supporting teeth.

Implants and removable dentures: different types of support

An implant is placed in the jaw to support a replacement tooth or restoration. A removable partial denture replaces some missing teeth; a full denture replaces a complete arch. Compare the assessment, treatment stages, daily cleaning, fit and future maintenance of each option. Read our implant and denture pages for more detail.

What can change the treatment recommendation?

Two teeth that look equally damaged may need different care. The location and depth of a break, remaining sound tooth structure, gum and bone support, existing restorations and biting forces all matter. A tooth with inflamed or infected pulp may need root canal treatment before its final restoration. A tooth that cannot be predictably restored may require a discussion about removal and replacement.

Ask which findings support the recommendation and what the alternatives would mean for the surrounding teeth, appointment sequence and daily care. Where appropriate, discuss the consequences of postponing treatment as well as the proposed treatment itself.

Compare the complete plan, not one line of an estimate

Before starting, clarify which items are included: the examination and imaging, tooth preparation or removal, temporary restorations, the final restoration, laboratory work and follow-up. Not every plan needs each item. Ask about additional costs if the examination reveals a different problem.

If several teeth need care, separate immediate priorities from later stages. A written plan can identify the teeth involved, recommended order, suitable alternatives and estimated patient costs. PPO benefits, Smile Club terms and financing terms should be reviewed separately from the clinical recommendation; coverage is not a guarantee that a particular treatment is appropriate or that the full fee will be paid.

Keeping repaired and replacement teeth working

Restorations need maintenance and may eventually need repair or replacement. Clean natural teeth and the areas around restorations every day, and learn any special technique needed for a bridge, implant or denture. Keep follow-up appointments so changes in fit, bite, gums or the restoration can be assessed. Contact the office about new pain, looseness, a break or food repeatedly trapping in the same place.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Questions about restorative treatment choices

How do I know whether I need a filling or a crown?

The amount and location of damage, remaining tooth structure and your bite influence the recommendation.

What are my choices for replacing a tooth?

A bridge, implant or removable partial denture may be considered. Suitability depends on the surrounding teeth, supporting tissues and your health.

Can treatment be completed in stages?

Some plans can be staged. Dr. Sharma can discuss priorities and whether timing affects the health or predictability of treatment.

How do I compare repairing and replacing a tooth?

Ask about the tooth’s condition, the proposed treatment, alternatives and ongoing care. You should understand why an option is recommended for your situation, including its tradeoffs and costs.
