Regular cleaning or deep cleaning: understanding the recommendation

If you expected a regular cleaning and were advised to have periodontal treatment, ask the dentist to walk you through the findings. The goal is to understand the condition being treated and the reasons for the plan.

Dental Krafts patient education · Updated September 11, 2026

A cleaning recommendation follows an examination. Ask what the gum findings show, which areas need care and what follow-up will involve.

Why cleaning recommendations differ

Regular preventive cleaning and scaling and root planing address different needs. Scaling and root planing is treatment below the gumline used for gum disease. An examination helps determine whether that care is appropriate. The American Dental Association’s patient explanation describes the procedure and why it may be recommended.

The word “deep” is not simply an upgrade to a routine visit. Ask which clinical findings explain the recommendation for you.

Ask to understand your gum evaluation

Useful questions include: What do my gum measurements show? Are there findings on my examination or imaging that affect the recommendation? Which areas need treatment? What would you monitor at a later visit?

You do not need to know the terminology before asking. Request an explanation in everyday language and ask the team to connect the findings to the proposed care.

Clarify the treatment and follow-up

Ask how many appointments are planned, which areas will be treated and how comfort will be managed. Scaling and root planing may take more than one visit. Reassessment and ongoing maintenance should be discussed as part of the plan.

Follow the home-care instructions provided for your situation. Tell the team if you are unsure how to clean a particular area or if discomfort makes home care difficult.

How the $99 visit and Smile Club fit in

Dental Krafts’ $99 uninsured new-patient offer includes a comprehensive exam, digital X-rays and a regular cleaning. Deep cleaning is excluded, and the examination determines the appropriate care.

The included adult cleanings in Smile Club are regular prophylaxes. Ask the office about any applicable discount for recommended periodontal care. Review the terms and your estimate before selecting an option.

Questions about costs and future visits

  • What services and areas are in the treatment estimate?
  • How are initial treatment and maintenance visits different?
  • What estimated benefits apply under my PPO plan?
  • When will the response to treatment be reassessed?
  • What should prompt me to contact the office?

Visit the cleanings and gum care page for appointment information. If you are uncertain about a recommendation, ask for clarification before treatment begins.
